SGPC hails US decision on turban for Sikhs

Batala: The Ardas ceremony, which was recited in the memory of six sikh worshippers who were killed in the shooting tragedy at the gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was attended by the Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Des Raj Dhugga and local residents in the gurdwara Damdama Sahib at Sri Hargobindpur. Dhugga said, “the US should initiate concrete measures to redress the identity issue of Sikhs as a number of Sikhs were attacked post 9/11 due to mistaken identity.” He expressed gratitude towards Obama administration.
Amritsar: Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar here on Monday hailed the decision of American Government to allow the people of Sikh community working in the American police to wear turban. Makkar conveyed his happiness and thanked the US government for taking such a decision for the Sikh community.
Makkar conveyed thanks to American US diplomats First Secretary (Political), Chad Thornberry, and Advisor Political affairs, A Sukesh, for visiting Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) for taking part in the Prayer Meeting held last week here in memory of those 6 innocent Sikhs killed in Wisconsin.
He thanked American government for its massive positive response and the magnanimity its leadership has shown in assuaging the hurt sentiments of the Sikh Diaspora. He expressed his desire to the American officials to follow strict measures to stop the recurrence of such incidents in future.
Extending gratitude of US president Barack Obama, Makkar said that SGPC thanked American Government for tackling the sensitive situation sensibly while overcoming the attacker in Gurdwara.
He also hailed the statement of Barack Obama for recognising the role of Sikhs in America for the growth and wellbeing of US. Obama has won the heart of Sikh community with his statement and extending help in these crucial hours, he said.
Makkar hailed US Government and President Barack Obama for ordering the US flag to fly half-mast till 10 August. Makkar said that the steps taken by US Government in favour of Sikh community will prove helpful to highlight the Sikh identity.
