Private engineering colleges are trying to fill up 15 per cent of the seats under the Odisha Joint Entrance Examinations (OJEE) that are sub judice, even after the completion of the admission process by allegedly terming them as ‘management seats’.
According to government officials, numerous private engineering colleges intent on filling up their seats use the ‘management seats’ tag to get students. According to OJEE regulations, only five per cent of the total seats is reserved for the NRI quota.
“It is the engineering colleges that eventually wanted to increase the percentage to 15 per cent,” said one of the OJEE officials. There was a provision that if the NRI seats are not filled up then those can be converted to the general category. But now no admissions can take place in these 15 per cent seats under OJEE owing to the pending case in the HC.
The private engineering colleges had collectively approached the High Court (HC) to increase the NRI quota seats from five to 15 per cent. This year, OJEE has not received even a single candidate under the NRI quota.
Currently there are strict orders that no admissions into the 15 per cent seats under OJEE can take place till the matter is resolved in the court.
Surprisingly none of the engineering colleges is mentioning the NRI quota anymore.
“Now most of the colleges refer to these 15 per cent seats as management seats whereas no such term exists,” said another government official.
