VANCOUVER: Unidentified assailants gunned down another Indo- Canadian gangster in broad daylight in front of his wife and child in Surrey. Police confirmed on Friday that the victim was 37-year-old Delta resident alias Jagdip Johal alias Jag, an associate of the Dhak gang and brother of cocaine smuggler Shminder Johal, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison in July for smuggling cocaine and guns into British Columbia (BC).

The gangster fired 10 bullets through the windshield at Johal, hitting him multiple times, while he sat on the passenger side of his SUV in a Newton Strip Mall parking lot at 68 Avenue and King George Boulevard, said the police. He was rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries. Surrey police Sgt Drew Grainger termed it a targeted attack, which was witnessed by Johal’s wife and four-year-old son, who remained unhurt, and many others as the plaza has a number of businesses catering to families and children. A gun with a silencer was found at the spot later.

Members of South Asians Dhak and Duhre gangs are on radar of other gangs over control of the BC drug cartel. It is widely feared now that the shooting may just be another marker of return of gang violence, which was at its peak in the region in the mid-2000s.

Over 120 gangs involved in the drug trade in BC are in tussle to fill the vacuum left by death of a few gang leaders in the past. Police too had openly announced that anyone with links to the Duhre and Dhak gangs could be at risk.

In the past few months, there have been at least a dozen attempts on lives of people who are even loosely connected to the allied South Asian gangs.
