Washington: Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting incident, which left six Sikh worshipers dead, was an act of ‘senseless killing,’ said the US President Barack Obama. He assured further support to the Sikh community in the country.

“It was a senseless killing and it should not have happened,” Obama told Washington-based Sikh community leaders Rajwant Singh and his wife Balvinder Singh at a reception hosted by the US President for diplomats and UN ambassadors at Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York on the eve of his speech at the United Nations.

“We thank you deeply for your kindness and your support during the tragedy at the Sikh Gurdwara in Wisconsin. We really appreciate it,” said Washington based Sikh Council on Religion and Education Chairman Rajwant Singh. “It was needed and more to come and you can be assured of that,” said Obama.

“I need that every day,” Obama said when Singh said, “We prayed for you and will continue to pray for God’s blessings upon you.”

US Sikh female student laughs off cruel taunts
London: A Sikh US university student who defended her facial hair and faith when a photo of her went viral has won a legion of fans for her dignified response, the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday. A man took a photo without Balpreet Kaur’s consent and uploaded onto Reddit in the ‘funny’ category with the tagline “im (sic) not sure what to conclude from this”.

The picture shows her standing in a queue. The student, who is president of the Sikh Student Association refused to attack the person who had posted the photo. The aspiring neurosurgeon, instead of flying into a rage at the person behind the cheap dig, posted a comment explaining why she did not remove her hair, the newspaper said. Kaur, who is an Ohio State University student, pointed out that as part of the five Ks that Sikhs follow, one of the tenets is Kesh, which asks that she allows her hair to grow naturally and does not cut it. Kaur said “I am not embarrassed or even humiliated by the attention because, it’s who I am.” Many viewers accused the person behind the cheap dig of being mean and deliberately trying to draw laughs.
