JALANDHAR: Wife of suspected terrorist and UK-based NRI Jaswant Singh aka Azad on Tuesday said he was innocent and that she had sought the British High Commission’s intervention in the case.
“It is incredulous that my husband of 40 years has been arrested as a suspected terrorist,” Jasreigh Kaur said on the phone from UK. “I was shocked to see a picture of him on the internet in which his face was covered with a hood and an accompanying article that stated he had been found with a gun, had funded terrorist organisations and used students to transfer money to terrorists.”
“These allegations are so false that I was bemused at the suggestion of them,” Kaur said. “I still live with my husband over a shop we have run for more than 25 years. I have approached the British Commissioner in New Delhi to seek his intervention in this false case lodged against him. The British have a record of transparent, just and fair trials, and I am hoping the Indian system is just as fair.”
Jaswant was arrested on Monday by the city police for allegedly waging war against the state and for having l i nks with terrorist groups Babbar Khalsa International, Khalistan Zindabad Force and Khalistan Tiger Force. Jaswant had visited India several times to allegedly fund and organise the activities of these terrorist organisations.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Diljinder Singh Dhillon, however, stood his ground saying, “We have enough evidence against Jaswant to prove his involvement in waging war against the state and bank accounts through which he got funds from radical outfits to create sleeping cells in Punjab.”
“He is the hub of all activities to fund terrorist elements in India and the money was collected through a radical TV channel, Sangat in the UK,” Dhillon said. He added that it was possible that Jaswant’s wife was ignorant of his activities.
