Jalandhar: A day after ‘old rivals’ of NRI Sabha, Punjab, came together for a ‘haphazard’ press conference claiming financial powers for the president of the Sabha, key contestants of the upcoming NRI Sabha elections on Wednesday distanced itself from what was briefed to the media on Tuesday.
Former president of NRI Sabha Kamaljit Singh Hayre had said on Tuesday that the president of the NRI Sabha should be given financial powers and that the executive committee should have an upper hand in decision-making process.
He had said that this issue was to be taken up in the upcoming annual general meeting of the sabha on October 28 scheduled to be held at Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar.
Hayre had stated, “NRI Sabha was an NGO and its status should remain the same. Even for a single decision, the president of the Sabha has to remain dependent on the chairman of the Sabha cum Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner, SR Ladhar and the Punjab government. We would always support the Punjab government but demand more powers for this post.”
During the press conference, the former presidents of the Sabha, Pritam Singh Narangpur, HS Sahota and former vice president Jasvir Singh Gill, had supported the statement of Hayre.
However on Wednesday, Jasvir Singh issued a press note stating he was surprised to see that Kamaljit Hayre spoke against the administration as well as the state government. “In the press conference, I had stated that we cannot think to move and work without the support and cooperation of the Punjab government. I don’t stand by the words of Kamaljit Hayre and Pritam Singh Narangpur. I had spoken for more powers to the president as well as the executive committee,” he said.
Jasvir said that he was not even aware of any press conference as Hayre had invited to discuss the agenda of the annual general meeting. “It was supposed to be an informal meeting but Hayre called a press conference and went ahead with his statements,” he clarified.
