CHANDIGARH: Taking up a petition filed by non-resident Indian Shingara Singh, native of Jassomajra village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) district, seeking deletion of his name from the list of ‘non-hardcore terrorists’, the Punjab and Haryana high court has issued notice of motion to the Punjab government.

The petition came up for hearing before the bench headed by justice Ram Chand Gupta on Thursday.

The petitioner submitted that his name had been included in the list of ‘non-hardcore terrorists’ maintained at Behiram police station in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district.

He informed the court that according to the information received under the RTI Act, the Behiram police station SHO had said that no criminal case was pending against him but his name figured in the list.

The petitioner submitted that on account of similarity of his name with another Shingara Singh of Kapurthala district, a proclaimed offender with a number of criminal cases pending against him, he was interrogated and harassed by the Punjab Police whenever he visited Punjab.

He submitted that the police had arrested and interrogated him twice earlier when he visited Punjab in 1997 and 1998. The petitioner has not visited India since 1999 on account of fear of Punjab Police, he submitted.
