CHANDIGARH/TORONTO: Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper who recently visited Punjab once again backed the Sikh community, while talking to the Punjabi media here in Toronto.

He said that one should not look towards every Sikh as a separatist, adding that India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was a Sikh and leader of international stature.Harper said the Sikhs had every right to voice their feelings, and demanding a separate homeland was not a crime as long as the demand did not disturb the peace of the nation and resorted to only peaceful means.

Talking about his visit to Anandpur Sahib, the Canadian PM said, he was the first chief of any nation to pay obeisance at the pious place.

Hailing the heritage of the Sikh community, Harper added, he was glad to know more about Punjab from where lakhs of people have settled at Canada and made it their homeland.
