CHANDIGARH: British Columbia finance minister Michael de Jong on Friday inaugurated a new trade and investment office at the Canadian Consul-General office at Chandigarh and expressed his opinion that the new office would strengthen economic ties between India and Canada.
The minister, who carries visiting cards printed in Punjabi on one side, said that the Punjabi community in British Columbia had not just a good numeric presence but become an important part of multiculturalsociety of the whole of Canada.
He said, “During my visit, I would be focusing on building strong bilateral trade relations between India and Canada and would be looking for promoting investment opportunities as outlined by PrimeMinisters Manmohan Singh and his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.”
The minister revealed that Canada was focusing on mutual trade and cooperation in hydro electricity projects, information technology, medical sciences, agriculture and agro-processing and bilateral tradeagreements between Canada and India would go a long way in strengthening historical ties between the two countries.
De Jong said, “There is a huge potential for mutual trade in sectors of energy, coal, technology, education, wood products and digital media ability. Trade must go both ways and both the countries have to go a long way in this regard.”
