JALANDHAR: Jasbir Singh Gill was elected president of the NRI Sabha here today. Election to the prestigious post of the president of the NRI body was held today under the supervision of ADC Punit Bhardwaj and SDM Iqbal Singh Sandhu.

In all 1624 members of the strength of over 2500 members cast their votes. 55 votes were declared invalid.

Sandhu said that Jasbir Singh won the election with a margin of 197 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Kamaljit Singh Hayer in a triangular contest by securing 657 votes as against 460 votes polled to Hayer.

Pritam Singh Narangpur trailed to third place with 452 votes. Both Hayer and Narangpur had served the Sabha as its presidents.

Hayer was confident this time too to fetch the prestigious post for the second consecutive term. But the atmosphere was said to be not in his favour due to opposition from some influential leaders of the SAD who were supposed to be install Gill in the NRI Sabha this time. Not only this certain NRI groups in abroad like North American Punjab Association had openly criticized the NRI Sabha for ignoring the interests of the NRIs and it had even declared not to participate in the elections.
