No dowry, NRI skips wedding; father arrested

Ferozepur : All arrangements were in place for the wedding, the bride’s relatives had arrived, but the groom did not turn up. The incident occurred in the Zira subdivision of Ferozepur where a non-resident Indian (NRI) ditched the bride and her family at the last moment.
The reason: his demand for dowry could not be met. Settled in Canada, Jasreen Singh Dhaliwal was slated to marry a local girl at Shehzada Resort in Zira on February 3.
In his complaint to the police, the bride’s father alleged that the groom’s family had demanded Rs 40 lakh in dowry.
As the family failed to arrange for more dowry, the accused and his family gave the wedding a miss.
The police has booked five persons, including the groom, his father Piara Singh, mother Sukhjit Kaur and two uncles Gurdeep Singh and Nirmal Singh, all belonging to Bajakhana area in Faridkot .
A case of cheating and demanding dowry has been registered against them.
Senior Superintendent of Police Varinder Pal Singh said Piara Singh and his brothers Gurdeep Singh and Nirmal Singh had been arrested.
