Fatehgarh Sahib: The Sikh community in Canada has decided to join the ‘One Billion Rising’ global action to end violence against women and girls.
‘One Billion Rising’ began as a call for action based on the staggering statistic that one in three women on the planet would be beaten up or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.
Canada World Sikh Organisation Executive Director Sukhvinder Kaur Vinning said on February 14, as part of ‘One Million Rising’, along with the free kitchen, several gurdwaras provided treats to the residents of 15 women shelters in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland.
“This year’s initiative has served as a pilot project and as a result, new partnerships have been formed,” she added.
Sikhs in Canada have now expressed interest in joining the ‘One Billion Rising’. “We have started discussing how we can take this movement to the Sikh communities across the country by next year,” Vinning said.
