The wife and son of a former district NRI sabha president have been charged with gangrape, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation. A sessions court on Monday framed the charges against Surinder Kaur, wife of the ex-NRI sabha chief, Amarjit Singh Virk and their son, Gurjeet Singh. Virk is already facing trial in the case after similar charges were slapped on him on January 10.
The charges were framed after the investigating officer moved a supplementary chargesheet in the sessions court. The case will now come up for hearing on April 20. Meanwhile, another lower court has issued arrest warrants for the third time against three others who were named in the FIR. The accused include Raguvir Kaur Khaira sub-divisional officer (retd), Mohali; Charanjit Kaur, a Mohali resident and Gurwinder Kaur Sodhi, a Chandigarh resident.
The case was filed in the district court on August 27, last year, after a 32-year-old Patiala resident lodged a complaint alleging that she had been sexually assaulted by Virk and three others in the Industrial Area, Phase VII, Mohali on July 13, 2011.
The woman alleged that the chief had met her at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) some months before the incident took place.
There he had allegedly promised to send her to Canada for Rs 15 lakh. As per her complaint, since Virk was unable to help her, he asked the woman to come to Chandigarh so he could return her money.
The victim is reportedly a Kabaddi player and had gone to the Civil Hospital, Phase VI Mohali for medical help after the alleged gangrape took place. Since she was alone, hospital authorities informed police before examining her.
