Baptized Sikh girl with turban denied admission; school apologises

JALANDHAR: Cambridge International School authorities today tendered apology to the Sikh organizations for denying admission to a Sikh girl student after the management learnt that the girl was a baptized one and would attend her classes wearing traditional Sikh symbols in the school.

US-based NRI Harprit Paul Singh, a resident of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar alleged that he went to the school at urban Estate to get her daughter Amandeep Kaur admitted in the 9th standard for which he also paid a sum of Rs. 1500 to secure admission form.

He alleged that the staff present on the counter facilitating admission of the students refused to accommodate the girl after it came to know that the girl would be coming to the school in full Sikh traditional dress as she had been baptized in the Sikh religion.

Parents of the girl immediately approached the local Sikh organizations following which Kulwant Singh Mannan, an SGPC member and Senior Sikh leader Jagjit Singh Gaba accompanied by other Sikh leaders rushed to the school. The Sikh raised slogans against the management of the school.

The school management immediately allowed admission to the student and tendered apology.
