UK-based NRI among two arrested for Jalandhar ASI killing

JALANDHAR: District rural police today claimed to have solved the mystery of the killing of Gurdev Singh an ASI heading the high way traffic police team on the night of March 31.

SSP rural Yurinder Singh Hayer, SSP Kapurthala Indervir Singh and SP (D) rural Rajinder Singh in a joint media conference broke the story of arresting two main accused involved in the crime besides apprehending eight others who had been either associated with them or were harbouring the hard core criminals.

The police have seized five fire weapons and a kg of heroine from the accused valued at Rs. 5 crore in the international market.

SSP Hayer said that four criminals involved in the crime were identified by the police investigating teams on the basis of the CCTV footage which helped in the arrest of UK based NRI Tarwinder Singh Tally and Pushpinder Singh alias Noni.

The other accused involved in the crime have been identified as Rajinder Mintoo and Palwinder Singh alias Pinda, and were still are at large.

He said that the shooting ASI Gurdev Singh to death was not a planned murder but to escape the police, the criminals shot him dead.

Giving the sequence of the incident, SSP Hayer said that all the four accused involved in the crime were taking food at the Haveli restaurant. One of them went to the toilet to consume intoxicant which forced the ASI to check what was going wrong in the toilet. He also grappled with the person soon after he came out of the toilet. His other accomplices immediately came to his help and tried to speed away Verna, a car they were travelling.

The ASI in a bid to chase them was fired at by the occupants of the car. The SSP said that the criminals fired several rounds of shots and the police was yet to establish that the bullet of whose criminal hit the ASI which claimed his life.

SSP said that Tarwinder Singh, a UK based NRI had actually come to Punjab on March 10 to settle score with a Dance Troupe Manager who had lured his fiancée, a girl dancer performing in the troupe. The manager was shot at Kharar but survived the attack sustaining injuries.

He said that one kg of heroine was seized on the instance of Pushpinder Singh alias Noni after he revealed astonishing information about the gang involved in a number of criminal activities like looting, snatching and other heinous crimes including the murder of Asi Gurdev Singh.
