Aiming to facilitate Non Resident Indians (NRIs) who hail from Majha region, the first NRI police station in this region was made operational at Amritsar. Although officials are still looking for a building for the NRI police station, one station house officer (SHO), two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) and 15 constables and head constables have been assigned to be deployed there.
Inspector Amrit Swaroop has been posted as the SHO of this police station, which would cover the entire Amritsar district and not only the commissionerate.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh said, "As soon as the notification in this regard was issued, we formed the police station and attached the staff to start with."
A couple of locations have been identified to house the NRI police station. A final decision would be taken in a day or two, he added.
The police officer said, "The new police station is as per the state government policy to help NRIs. All NRI-related complaints will be dealt with by this new police station."
This would not only help in focused investigation of cases related to NRIs but also make it easy for the NRIs to approach police if they faced any trouble, he added.
The police commissioner further added that very soon the NRI police station would have its own email ID and a toll-free number for the convenience of people.
With more people from the Majha region settling abroad, the Amritsar police in the past had witnessed regular complaints from the Punjabis living abroad. Most complaints of NRIs were related to property or matrimonial issues.
When contacted, Jalandhar Zone IG Gurpreet Kaur Deo, who is also incharge of NRI affairs, said, "Amritsar NRI police station has raised the number of such police stations in Punjab to eight. Since most complaints regarding NRI issues in Majha region came from Amritsar, a decision was taken to set up the new police station in Amritsar city."
The NRI police station would cover the entire district. "In future, if need be, we can also bring Tarn Taran under it," said the police officer.
