MOGA: A local session’s court Wednesday acquitted NRI Jagdev Gill, one of the last accused in murder case of Congress MLA and father of former Punjab DGP PS Gill, Nachhatar Singh Gill, killed 22 years ago.
Canadian citizen Jagdev Gill was the last person facing trial as other accused including his mother Pritam Kaur, brother Hardev Singh, sister Paramjit Kaur and one Gurtej Singh, booked for conspiracy had been acquitted by Supreme Court on December 10, 1998.
District and Sessions Judge Karamjit Singh Kang held that the prosecution "completely failed" to establish its case and the defence satisfied the court that the accused was falsely implicated.
Gill returned from Canada and surrendered before the court in February 2009 after finding that a criminal case was pending against him.
Police had named Gurjit Singh and Chamkaur Singh as accused after the MLA was murdered on September 29, 1991.
While Gurjit was killed in a police encounter, Chamkaur remains missing and has been declared a proclaimed offender by the court.
The names of Gill and his family later cropped up in the case.
Jagdev Gill had pleaded innocence claiming that he was not in India at time of murder.
Gill had given security clearance by Punjab police to get citizenship of Canada but when PS Gill took over as Punjab DGP, he started hounding the persons named in the FIR.
