Moga : A 48-year-old businessman hailing from Moga district was shot in Manila in Philippines on Thursday.

Jagroop Singh, hailing from Daudhar village, 29 km from here, was running a finance company in Manila for the last seven years. A pal of gloom descended on the village on Thursday evening as Jagroop’s close relative Harpreet Singh, who had been also staying in Philippines for the past 10 years, conveyed the news to his parents.

According to the family, Jagroop was shot outside Manila city by unidentified assailants, who had their faces covered, while he was travelling on a highway on his motorcycle. “We will try to bring back his body in India and approach External Affairs Minister of State Perneet Kaur in this regard,” said Hazura Singh, father of Jagroop.

Kuldeep Kaur, wife of the deceased, said that her husband had gone to the Philippines seven years ago. “It is a heartbreaking for the family as we were not with him during his last days and could not see the body,” she said.

Jagroop’s mother Nasib Kaur said, “When my younger son went to Manila on a work-permit visa, I thought all our all problems would end as my hard-working brother would be a success story on the foreign land. But fate had something else in store for us”.
