WASHINGTON/FATEHGARH SAHIB: A clean-shaven Sikh man working at a gas station (petrol pump) in New Jersey was shot dead on Sunday night in a case of attempted robbery.
Surinder Singh, 40, had been working as an attendant at Garden State Fuel in Woodbury for the past 14 years. He hailed from Dhaner village near Raikot in Ludhiana district.
The local police in New Jersey have announced a reward of $8,000 (about R5.6 lakh) for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the murder.
A massive manhunt has been launched in New Jersey for the two persons allegedly responsible for the murder. The police also released the sketch of one suspect. One of the suspects was described as a dark-skinned man armed with a small handgun. They fled the scene in a vehicle north on Broad Street.
According to the police, Surinder was shot in the upper chest and near the right armpit. Surinder, who was very popular among his customers, had recently brought his wife and two children from India to live with him in Woodbury. His younger brother, who also works at the gas station, said, “It’s so bad. I never even thought about something like this.” Arjun Goyal, owner of the gas station, said, “He was a very sincere, hard worker. Everybody in the neighbourhood liked him.”
Erita Polanco, who works at Colonial Diner, located next door to the gas station, heard gunshots on Sunday night, but wasn’t sure what had happened until the police informed the diner’s employees a while later.
An autopsy performed on Monday determined that Surinder died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
Talking to HT on Wednesday, North American P unjabi Association (NAPA) office-bearer Satnam Singh Chahal alleged that US law-enforcement agencies had failed to protect the lives and property of the Sikh community in the country.
