CHANDIGARH: In the wake of Canadian government clarifying that the country had not refused protection to Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who recently cancelled his trip to Vancouver citing security reasons, the Dal Khalsa has said he should step down on moral grounds for bluffing and misleading the people.

In a statement party’s spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh quoted statement of Jean-Bruno Villeneuve, spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of the Canadian government that "we never received a formal request for security, so such a request could not have been refused”.

He said the official of Indian foreign ministry and the Sukhbir Badal had told lie on the matter thus making mockery of the people of Punjab. Let Sukhbir clarify his position as to what prompted him to speak lie and reveal the real reason behind his cancellation of the trip. He said for the people of Punjab, the cat was out of the bag adding, “The real reason for cancelation is the fear of litigation and possible detention by Canadian legal system. Security concern was a mere smoke screen”.

He recalled that on August 23, the Dal Khalsa had written an open letter to the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, in which the organisation had strongly contested the claims made by the Indian foreign ministry that the Canadian government had refused to provide adequate security cover to him.

Quoting from the letter, the party spokesperson said “On the issue of facilitating your tour to Canada, the Central government has played the role of spoilsport”.
