Punjabi family attacked in US

JALANDHAR: In yet another attack on Punjabis in the US, a woman and her transporter son were shot at by an unidentified man at their house in Manteca city of California on Saturday.
The police took them to a local hospital where their condition is said to be stable.
Gulwinder Singh Gakhal, originally from Gakhla village of Jalandhar district, ran a diamond transport company in California. His sister conveyed the news to the relatives at Gakhla village on Sunday.
According to the family, an unidentified armed masked man entered Gakhal’s house on Saturday morning and fired at Gakhal’s mother Mohinder Kaur, 70. On hearing the gun shots, Gakhal who was sleeping on the first floor came down. As he tried to resist, the assailant fired at him.
Gakhal’s wife Harjeet Kaur was also injured. Gakhal’s daughter Kirandeep, 13, called up the police who took the injured to the hospital.
Gulwinder’s friend Natha Singh Gakhal told HT that Gulwinder, his mother and wife were out of danger and Gulwinder would undergo a surgery on Monday.
He said Gulwinder ran a diamond transport company and was member of the Stockton Gurdwara management committee. He said that in July also, Gulwinder was hit by an unidentified person in the head with a stone and stabbed in the face. He said Gakhal had received 40 stitches in the ear, eye and on the nose then “It seems to be a racial attack as there were no signs of robbery,” he said.
