The shooting began at roughly 1.25 am on Highway 99 near Taylor Road. Sandhu called 9-1-1 to report that unknown men were shooting at him from a dark-coloured sedan.
Shortly thereafter, the Turlock police received 9-1-1 calls reporting gunfire in the area of East Main Street and Lyons Avenue.
Bullet casings were found at Pioneer Avenue, indicating that the fatal shooting could have occurred there. Sandhu was found dead in his car, a white Infiniti Sedan, a few blocks away. The car had jumped the curb in front of a church.
Sandhu’s family had moved from Jalandhar to Modesto (California) four years ago. The victim was working as a delivery driver for a beverage company. His family said he received a phone call and he left home thereafter.
They did not know who the caller was.
Based on his Facebook account, Sandhu was born in Jalandhar. He was a sympathiser of “Khalistan,” a secessionist movement.
Most of his posts are related to the 1984 Sikh riots in India after the assassination of then PM Indira Gandhi.
