London : Britain's first woman magistrate of Indian-origin has died at the age of 84. Chand Lal-Sarin, who came to Coventry in 1962 from India's state of Punjab, became a magistrate in 1970, the Coventry Telegraph reported..
The report, however, did not mention how and when she died. Chand's husband Daman, now 90, had set up his dental practice in Coventry's Broad Street after arriving from India. Chand used to work on issues concerning women from the Asian community.
She was also a police interpreter.
"My mother was vivacious, she was full of life. She was a charmer. She was a pillar of the community even during the time of Enoch Powell's 'Rivers of Blood' speech," Chand's daughter Renuka Kapoor was quoted as saying.
