Mohali : Now on, the special NRI wing will help people verify the credentials of would-be NRI grooms/brides so that they are not fed on wrong facts. The objective is to save gullible persons from being deceived by unscrupulous NRIs.
LK Yadav, Deputy Inspector-General, said: “In view of the growing cases of matrimonial disputes involving NRIs, we have decided to provide this service to the people here.
“But certainly we have no intentions to run a marriage bureau,” he added on a lighter note.
About 3,000 complaints have been lodged with the police NRI wing (which was inaugurated in August this year) and 50 per cent of these are matrimonial disputes.
Yadav said in several cases, the NRI grooms/brides had been found married already or without permanent residency in that country.
Yadav said the special police wing also ran a check to determine if they had a criminal record.
