NRI panel seeks report

Chandigarh : The NRI Commission of Punjab on Tuesday directed the SSPs of Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar and Tarn Taran districts to contact the aggrieved families of 15 Punjabi youth languishing in a jail at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for the past two months.

They have been asked to submit details of the youth along with those of their kith and kin on or before January 14 so that the Commission could initiate appropriate action for their release.

The Commission took suo motu notice of news reports published on December 31 in respect of 15 Punjabi youth languishing in jail at Abu Dhabi.

It was reported in the media that the families of Balwinder Singh, Bhalmal Singh and Kesar Singh of Nawanshahr, Balbir Ram of Garhshankar, Manjit Singh of Balachaur, Balwinder Singh of Jalandhar and Satwinder Singh of Tarn Taran have no clue why their family members have been put behind bars, besides having no knowledge on how to take up their matter with the authorities concerned.

The Commission also decided to take up the matter with the Union Ministries of External Affairs and Overseas Indian Affairs to ensure the release of Punjabi youth as early as possible.
