Navjeevan Society gives grant to 6 deportees from UK

Jalandhar : Continuing with their humanitarian service of rehabilitating deportees from foreign shores, the Navjeevan Charitable Society in association with the Diocese of Jalandhar distributed reintegration amount to refugees who returned from the UK under ‘Reintegration Project’.

The society gave grant-in-aid to six deportees returned from the UK in Jalandhar on Monday. The grant of Rs 1 lakh each was handed over to six youth belonging to the NRI belt of Doaba.

Among the beneficiaries were Baljinder Singh and Sukhdev Singh from Jalandhar, Manjinder Singh from Taran Tarn, Gurbax Singh from Mohali, Kulwant Singh from Kapurthala and Satinder Singh from Adampur near Jalandhar.

Jackson, a coordinator of the project in association with Father Binu Joseph, the assistant director of the society and members of CHITRA, a Human Rights NGO were present on this occasion. “All the six youth were given financial assistance for helping them in setting up some work in their home towns. As the youth had gone to the UK after mortgaging their houses and land holdings, there was a dire need to provide them monetary support, lest they were left in the lurch”, Jackson said.

Talking about the ‘Reintegration Project’, he said that the UK government conducted investigations of the youth after it was found that they visa has expired and they were overstaying in the UK. “Under this project, the UK government tied up with some NGOs abroad and we provided them financial assistance in Punjab”, he said.

Earlier, in the month of February this year, the Navjeevan Charitable Society provided Rs 1.50 lakh grant in aid to four youth, who were deported to India. This project was started by the society in the year 2011 and till date as many as 190 refugees were rehabilitated by the society.

The NGO besides providing financial assistance to youth in distress had also been creating awareness among the people about legal ways of migrating abroad and remaining alert from the vicious circle of illegal travel agents. “Courtesy, the vast spread nexus of travel agents that unemployed youth in Punjab had been falling prey to this nuisance”, they said.
