LONDON: Air India is scheduled to start daily flights from Birminghan to New Delhi and Amritsar later this month, catering to the large number of people of Indian origin in the west Midlands who hail from Punjab and other parts of north India.

Currently, Air India runs four flights per week to these destinations from Birmingham (UK), but it will be extended to every day with the acquisition of new aircraft, reports from Birmingham said.

Birmingham airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said: “We are incredibly thankful to Air India for committing to daily services from Birmingham and adding more direct capacity to India from the Midlands.”

Headded: “The West Midlands receives more foreign direct investment from India than any other region outside of London and Birmingham’s ‘visiting friends and relatives’ (VFR) market grew by 71% in 2013, now attracting more visitors from India than any English city other than London.”

Vishwanath Panyam, Air India’s assistant general manager, added: “The West Midlands is home to more than 2 lakh British-Indian people, so we are pleased to be able to not only serve this extensive VFR market but also give business travellers direct access to the whole of India via Delhi on the comfortable, quiet and state-ofthe-art Boeing-787 Dreamliner aircraft.”
