754 NRIs on ‘wanted’ list of Punjab Police

Jalandhar : As many as 754 NRIs are wanted by the Punjab Police, most of them from the Doaba region.

Sources said 843 NRIs were declared POs (proclaimed offenders) by the state police last year. But the names of 89 were deleted for various reasons such as death and quashing of FIRs. The figure now is 754.

Most of these offenders have taken shelter in Canada, the UK, the US, Germany, Italy, Dubai, New Zealand and Greece.

In the Doaba region, 310 NRIs have been declared POs — 274 are wanted by the Jalandhar Commissionerate (77) and Jalandhar (Rural) police (197), 15 by the Hoshiarpur police,13 by the Kapurthala police and eight by the Nawanshahr police.

Most of these NRIs are wanted for sham marriages and matrimonial fraud (164), cheating (170) and heinous crimes like murder and attempt to murder (139). Many of them have been evading arrest for more than three decades.

As many as 123 NRIs are wanted by the Moga police, 53 by the Ludhiana police, 25 by the Faridkot police, 23 by the Khanna police, 22 by the Amritsar police and 19 by the Bathinda police.

No NRI has been declared PO by the Pathankot, Patiala and Fazilka police.

Washington : The Indian-American community in the US has urged the Trump administration to “fully support” India’s decision to revoke the constitutional provision that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir and to continue to exert pressure on Pakistan to end its support to cross-border terrorism.
