Come clean on farmers' misery - 24/02/2008

Mr Sukhbir Badal
Member of Parliament
New Delhi

24 February 2008

Dear Sukhbir,

Sub: Come clean on farmers' misery

It is hoped that the Presidency of the SAD brings with it new challenges and a touch
of realism. After all, you have to deliver what you preach.

But noting your new found interest in the impoverished and debt burdened farmers of
Punjab, one is pained that:

1. As Minister of State for Industries for 18 months in 1998-9 you were unable to
take up any farmers cause

2. As an MP you have failed to speak in Parliament on the critical need of debt
relief for farmers

3. You failed to extract any farmers debt relief package from the previous NDA
government of which the SAD was a key member.

4. You are making lofty commitments to the people of Punjab like the Ludhiana metro
and surplus power yet your government has failed to announce even a single Rupee of
bonus for the last paddy harvest and the forthcoming wheat harvest.

You record confirms that outside of Punjab you suffer from selective amnesia,
especially on the issue of Punjab's farmers.

I accept that you have to perform dramas to vindicate that your position as
President of the SAD but please do not make the poor Punjab farmer a political
football.

Above all you owe an explanation to the people of Punjab as to why you have as
central Minister and MP, failed to campaign for the Punjab farmer.

Regards,

Yours sincerely,

Jassi Khangura MLA
Halqa Qila Raipur
