As an MP be consistent on MSP - 05/06/2008

Mr Sukhbir Badal, MP

President SAD

256, Sector 9C

Chandigarh

05 June 2008

Dear Mr Badal,

As an MP be consistent on MSP

Your recent comments asking for MSP on paddy to be raised to Rs.1500/kwt are markedly in contrast to you first term as an MP when as a Minister of State of the then NDA government in 1998 and 1999 you applauded the “great victory” of paddy increments of Rs.25/kwt and Rs.50/kwt in 1998 and 1999 respectively.

I am sure that you now agree that this was no victory for the Punjab farmers but, in hindsight a monumental fraud promoted by the Akali party, which at the time ruled Punjab.

Did you not congratulate Mr Vajpayee at the time for this “great gift”?

For you to now demand a massive increase knowing full well that the forthcoming paddy MSP increment will be the largest in history, smacks of opportunism.

The reality is that we are days away from a historic announcement by this UPA government of the largest increase ever, both absolutely and in percentage terms.

Maybe this time you will accept reality and take to Delhi bouquets for Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose UPA government has done more for the poor Punjab farmer, with record MSP enhancements on MSP for all crops, particularly for wheat and paddy, together with massive debt relief, than the NDA governments ever did.

I fail to see much evidence from the Lok Sabha records that you have had much time in your glorious parliamentary career to raise the interests of the Punjab farmers by question or voice.

Be consistent and get ready to congratulate our current PM on the forthcoming historic announcement.

Regards,

Jassi Khangura MLA
