Govt has lost moral authority to govern - 19/06/2009

LUDHIANA, June 19: Reacting to the incident of the merciless manhandling of a tehsildar GS Benipal, who was almost lynched, in his office in full public view by Akali councilor Simarjit Singh Bains and his supporters today, the Kila Raipur MLA Mr Jassi Khangura today said that the state government had lost all the moral authority to govern.

Addressing a press conference alongwith Nathana MLA Ajaib Singh Bhatti, here today, he pointed out, the way the tehsildar was almost lynched by the mob led by Bains, who claims proximity to the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, only reminded of the la Apply wlessness that used to prevail in Bihar.

The tehsildar was severely beaten up, after all his clothes were taken off. The attackers also took away his service revolver, his wallet, his gold chain and other belongings including the clothes he was wearing. They also allegedly shot at him in the leg.

The tehsildar had provoked the fury of Bains and his supporters after he refused to succumb to the pressure of getting various illegal jobs done for them.

Khanugra said, the injured tehsildar who is undergoing treatment in the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital told him that the mob led by Bains left him only after they thought he was already dead. Not a single part of his body has been left untouched and he is bruised from head to toe.

The Kila Raipur MLA said, they had little hope from the government as Bains proclaimed his proximity to Mr Sukhbir Badal. Interestingly Bains happens to be the complainant in the case of attempt to murder registered against the Talwandi Sabo MLA, Jeet Mohinder Singh, in Bathinda on the day of parliamentary election there on May 7.

Mr Khangura appealed to the Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal to take serious note of the situation and not allow the state to slide into anarchy. “Your MLA goes to the house of the Minister and abuses and threatens him and one of your councilors leads a mob and almost lynches one of your officer”, Khangura told Mr Badal while warning, “this will convey a very bad impression of the state outside”.

“Let us hope you let the law take its own course and not let the impression go around that the guilty can go scottfree under your patronage”, Khangura hoped of Mr Badal. He pointed out, if this can happen with an officer of the government, what would be the fate of a common man.
