FEROZEPUR: Eight Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers were booked on charges of attempt to murder after they clashed with Congress activists in the district on late Friday evening.

The clash took place when Charanjit Singh Brar, officer on special duty (OSD) to SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal who is party nominee from Ferozepur Lok Sabha seat, was reportedly campaigning in Arifke village, along with other Akali leaders and workers.

When the SAD leaders and workers were returning after the event, Congress activists staged a protest against them and waived black flags at them.

This led to an altercation which later turned into a violent clash. Both the groups indulged in stone pelting on each other.

In the clash, Congress worker Bali Singh of village Usmanwala sustained injuries. He was admitted to the local civil hospital. A sports utility vehicle (SUV) was badly damaged in the incident.

Ferozepur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sandeep Goel said, “A case was registered against eight persons under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 307 (attempt to murder).”

The accused were identified as Sandeep Singh, Sukhpal Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Lovepreet Singh, Jagjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Inderjit Singh and Iqbal Singh, all Akali Dal workers.

Four unidentified persons were also booked in the case, the SSP said, adding that further investigations were on.
