Police fail to take action under political pressure

Tarn Taran (Amritsar) : A Punjab police sub-inspector and former Akali sarpanch, the key accused in a murder case of a youth, allegedly brutally beaten up the deceased accomplice to create fear among the family members so that they would withdraw the murder complaint against him. Not only this, the accused also made a video of thrashing of deceased’s accomplice and uploaded it on the social networking sites to showcase his power and influence in the region.
However, police have registered a case against the accused under Section 326 of the IPC, but failed to arrest him. Accused Balbir Singh, a former Akali sarpanch and a Punjab police sub-inspector Gurcharan Singh along with six other persons had allegedly attacked a 25-year-old Gurjant Singh around two months back with sharp-edged weapons and chopped him into pieces and fled the scene. Though police had registered a case under Section 302 of IPC, but never arrested the accused.
Deceased’s wife Simranjit Kaur said that even after the passage of two months, police have not arrested both the accused as they are the close associates of the area Cabinet minister. She further said police are not arresting the accused because of the political pressure. She also said that accused have threatened her family of dire consequences if they do not withdraw the case.
She added that when she lodged the complaint with police, both the accused along with six other persons picked up her husband’s companion and brutally beaten him up and also made the video of the entire episode and uploaded it on social networking sites to show his power and hold in the region. She also warned the police if they do not take any action against the said accused, then her family would commit suicide and police would be held responsible for it.
Deceased Gurjant’s mother said that the accused were in the business of drugs smuggling which his son got to know and when he opposed them, they killed him.
