Ferozepur : Fuelling speculations regarding the growing differences within the ruling coalition, the BJP held a massive road show for its candidates contesting the forthcoming cantonment general elections. The polls will be held on January 11. For the first time since both the parties had forged an alliance in the state, they are contesting a poll against each other.
While addressing the gathering at Azad Chowk today, State BJP chief Kamal Sharma promised to change the draconian laws dating back to the British era. He also promised to abolish octroi in the cantonment area. Sharma said certain areas would be declared as freehold so residents could own properties. Union Minister Vijay Sampla and other senior BJP leaders also participated in the road show with a cavalcade of over 500 vehicles. No Akali leader attended the event.
Since these elections are not fought on any party symbol, candidates supported by Akalis have chosen ‘lion’ as their symbol. The candidates supported by the BJP have opted for the ‘cow’.
Sharma, while ruling out any major differences within the coalition, said it was not necessary for the SAD-BJP to fight the cantonment elections together.
Senior SAD leaders are also drumming up support for their candidates. Joginder Singh, SAD MLA from Ferozepur rural, has fielded his sons from ward number 1 & 2. He had started his career as Member Cantonment Board (MCB).
BJP’s Zora Singh, who switched to the party from SAD, is contesting against Sanjay Gupta (DCC block president) and SAD’s Raj Kumar from ward number 3.
Similarly, there is a triangular contest among SAD, the BJP and the Congress in all the wards. Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinki is also canvassing vigorously for candidates supported by the Congress.
