JALANDHAR/NAKODAR: The Anganwadi Mulazam Union Punjab’s east and urban block members on Wednesday burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not enhancing wages of anganwadi workers, a demand that has been pending since a long time.
They said the government had promised to hold a talk with the members after the Jantar Mantar protest in Delhi on November 21, but nothing has happened on that front till now.
The delegation demanded that till the employees are covered under a pension scheme with assured pension, the retrenchment of the anganwadi employees must be stopped. Their other demands included: recognition of all anganwadi workers and helpers at the grass root level as employees and their regularisation as grade III and grade IV government employees and social security benefits including gratuity, pension, medical facilities.
Protests by AMUP also took place in Nakodar with more than hundred members blocking traffic at the Jalandhari Pulli and burning an effigy of the PM.
The workers threatened intensification of the stir if the demands were not fulfilled and announced a march towards the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on March 9.
