FARIDKOT: A senior Akali leader from here Amarjit Kaur, who is also a Zila Parishad member from Rori Kapura in the district, allegedly dragged a tractor driver from his seat and repeatedly slapped him in full public view accusing him of hitting her vehicle (Toyota Innova) from behind. However, she failed to show any damage to her vehicle when the people, who gathered there, asked her about the damage to the vehicle.
The incident took place at about noon in a highly-congested area on the Moga road near the bus stand, Kotkapura.
Amarjit Kaur had been the former sarpanch of Panjgrain Kalan village and had also contested the last assembly elections from Jaitu (reserved) on the ticket of the People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) and before the elections to the panchayat samitis and the zila parishads, she had switched over to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and had won from Rori Kapura zone.
As she started beating up the driver, several people gathered there and, when they found that there was no any damage to her Innova, they gheraoed her vehicle and shouted slogans against the government and the leader for her alleged high-headedness.
After the protest by a large number of people, the police had no option but to book the Akali leader and four others who were also in the car.
However, the police booked only under sections 107/151 of the CrPc (Apprehension of breach of peace and tranquility of an area) to pacify the protesters.
However, Amarjeet Kaur denied that she had assaulted the driver.
“The driver hit my vehicle from behind and damaged it. I also got a jerk and my head banged against the seat ahead. We only argued with him as he was at fault. People are just accusing us without any basis. The people are doing so to only defame,” said Amarjeet Kaur.
She continued to insist that the tractor had hit her vehicle.
“We have booked her under sections 107/151 and action will be taken as per law,” said Amaritpal Singh Bhatti, station house officer city, Kotkapura, who took her to the police station. The woman and four others were on produced in front a duty magistrate in Kotkapura and were granted bail.
