Sangrur : About 1.5 lakh beneficiaries of various schemes of the Social Security Department — old-age pension and financial assistance to widows, dependent children and disabled persons of Rs 250 per month – are awaiting payment for September and October in Sangrur and Barnala districts.

Also, these beneficiaries have not been getting monthly old-age pension and financial assistance on a regular basis. They were paid old-age pension and financial assistance for August in the first week of November.

Sources said that the District Social Security Office had already sent pension and financial assistance bills online to the district treasury office here for September. However, these bills have not been passed by the district treasury so far.

Sources said that the district social security office had the funds with it for disbursing aid but the beneficiaries would not get it till the state government gave its nod.

Though Barnala was made a district in November 2006, the district office of the Social Security Department has not been set up by the state government in Barnala so far. As a result, old-age pensions and financial assistance benefits are being disbursed by the Sangrur district office.

There are over 1 lakh beneficiaries of old-age pension scheme, over 22,500 widows, about 7,700 dependent children and over 15,600 disabled beneficiaries in Sangrur and Barnala districts.

Old-age pension and financial assistance under widow, dependent children and disabled person schemes had been paid to over 1.43 lakh beneficiaries out of about 1.5 lakh for August in Sangrur and Barnala districts.
