FARIDKOT: A 31-year-old man driving a car was decapitated while his brother suffered injuries after it collided with a bus on the outskirts of Jaitu on Tuesday. Angry residents vandalised the bus, owned by Hargobind Bus Service of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Yadwinder Singh Yadi, and protested until the driver was arrested, though he got bail later.

The brothers were travelling in a Maruti Suzuki Baleno car towards Jaitu from their village Sedha Singh Wala when the bus ran over a side of the vehicle, killing Jaskaran on the spot as his head was chopped off. His brother Gursewak Singh, 25, had a narrow escape with injuries. Jaskaran is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter.

The driver and conductor of the bus fled from the spot, when angry residents of the area smashed the bus and blocked traffic on the Jaitu-Bajakhana road. They demanded that a case be registered against the owner of the bus company and alleged that the bus did not have valid permits.

The dharna was lifted after the police informed the residents that the bus driver, Thana Singh, was arrested under sections 279 (279) and 304A (causing death due to negligence), and got bail. “Whether the bus had valid permits or not can be ascertained after the investigation,” said Nanak Singh, senior superintendent of police.
