Chandigarh : Punjab government on Thursday ordered repatriation of IAS officer K J S Cheema to his parent cadre West Bengal after being on ‘deputation’ for a decade during SAD-BJP regime. He was also relieved with immediate effect.
Considered close to former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Cheema’s case was a ‘curious’ one. The state Personnel Department had termed his deputation as ‘unauthorised’ and as such recommended he should be repatriated. The Central government had also objected to his stay in Punjab since the officer’s inter-state cadre deputation was in violation of IAS (Cadre) Rules, 1954. The Personnel Department had also communicated to West Bengal government to act against him.
Cheema enjoyed proximity to Badal as well as senior Congress leader and former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal. A 1993-batch IAS officer, Cheema was posted as Special Principal Secretary to CM Badal. His closeness to Bhattal came to the fore during 2012 assembly elections. The rival candidates had complained to Election Commission against his involvement in her election campaign.
