Amritsar : Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to waive farmers’ debt, saying the State Farmers’ Commission will work out modalities and give viable recommendations in two months.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of his visit to the Punjab State War Heroes Memorial and Museum here, the chief minister said he is committed to implementing all the election promises, including the farm loan waiver, elimination of the drug menace and exemplary punishment for those found guilty of sacrilege.
Fielding questions, Singh said the Uttar Pradesh government had merely announced debt waiver for farmers to the tune of Rs 1 lakh without any “practical framework” to implement the same.
His government, on the other hand, will formulate a comprehensive mechanism to free the beleaguered farmers of Punjab from their debt burden, he promised.
On the drugs issue, the Special Task Force is tackling the problem “aggressively and in right earnest”. However, he sought more time to rid the state completely of the menace.
“Considering that his government had just completed 60 days in office, the results were quite positive and drugs were in short supply as a result of the crackdown by the police... pushing them beyond the reach of drug addicts,” said the chief minister.
