Jalandhar : Aimed at implementing ‘Green Agenda’, five Congress MLAs and Jalandhar Member Parliament (MP) on Monday joined hands to take on the erring officials, who were responsible for not taking action against industrial units polluting rivers of Punjab.

Five MLAs, namely Olympian Pargat Singh from Jalandhar Cantonment, Bawa Henry from Jalandhar North, Rajinder Beri from Jalandhar Central, Surinder Chaudhary from Kartarpur and Sushil Kumar Rinku from Jalandhar West constituency and Jalandhar MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary on Monday met environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal and discussed the need to implement the Green Agenda.

Seechewal pulled up the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), Municipal Corporation (MC) Jalandhar and the Punjab Sewerage Board employees for failing to take action and making the initiative of saving rivers from pollution a success.

Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh was vocal against the role of PPCB officials and said, “The PPCB officials were least bothered to take action against erring industrial units and were more concerned about minting money from big business houses.”

Notably, during the recently-held assembly elections, the Punjab Congress has announced in its election manifesto to implement ‘Green Agenda’.

Further, Bawa Henry and Sushil Rinku questioned the MC officials that how come the 50 MLD Sewerage Treatment Plant set up at Basti Peer Daad, which was capable of running till 2025, failed within two years.

Earlier, Seechewal said that if the polluted water of Kala Sanghian and Jamsher drain was treated, it could be used for agricultural purpose. “A public campaign should be started to clean the polluted rivers of Punjab and save environment. It is important to save water and make people realise its value,” he said.
