Will ensure safety of Indians abroad: Sushma to Capt

KAPURTHALA : Four days after a 32-year-old Jagjeet Singh of Nadala village in Kapurthala was stabbed to death by unidentified persons outside a grocery store at Modesto city in California, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday assured Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh to help and protect all Indian citizens, including Sikhs, living abroad.

Sushma’s assurance came after Amarinder sought help to protect Sikhs living abroad on twitter referring to the murder of Jagjeet Singh in a suspected hate crime.

Amarinder had tweeted on Sunday afternoon: “@SushmaSwaraj Another Sikh youth killed in suspected hate crime in US, seek your help to protect Sikhs living abroad,” after tweeting a report of Jagjeet’s muder carried in Hindustan times.

Later, the Union minister responded on twitter: “I have spoken to our Ambassador Mr.Navtej S.Sarna @ Indian EmbassyUS. We are committed to help and protect all Indian citizens abroad.”

Jagjeet was attacked when he denied cigarettes to a local resident outside a store, where he wasworking. Heissurvivedby his wife Kuljeet Kaur and two sons, who live at Nadala village. Jagjeet’s father Mohinder Singh said: “The US authorities will hand over the body to our relatives on Monday evening. But we are not in a position to bring the body back home due to financial constraints.” He said the family has also requested the local administration for financial support to bring Jagjeet’s body back.
