CHANDIGARH : Newly appointed president of the Punjab congress Sunil Jakhar on Friday rebuffed talks in the political circles that two power centres would emerge in Punjab (with his appointment as the PPCC president). He said as the party president, his role was to complement the captain Amarinder Singh government.

“I will not interfere in the government functioning, but no one can deny the oversight,” he said in a media interaction.

“My role is to start a two way communication between the party workers and the government. I will act like a safety valve and give feedback to the government on development schemes,” he said.

Speaking on the role assigned to him by party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Jakhar said he had been asked to build up new, young and capable leadership in Punjab.

He said the next challenge for the party was municipal polls which are scheduled for JulyAugust and the Gurdaspur parliament bypolls.

He also dismissed reports of the Congress trying to poach Aam Aadmi Party MLAs.
