Chandigarh : Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar said today that no worker of the ruling party would interfere in the functioning of government officials, even as he ruled out the possibility of acting as a parallel power centre.
“But at the same time, the party rank and file will ensure that any person who visits an office for work is given the utmost respect by the officer and other staff members concerned,” he said.
He suggested that bureaucrats should move out of their airconditioned rooms and reach out to the people.
“Why should people queue up before officers to get their work done when the latter, with all facilities at their disposal, can easily serve them at their doorstep?” said Jakhar.
“With the change of guard in the state, the bureaucracy should also change, discarding the partisan culture that was promoted by the previous SAD-BJP government,” he added.
The PPCC chief said he would work for the success of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh by providing him unbiased and frank feedback gathered through the party network.
On the upcoming municipal elections and the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha byelection, he said, “In view of the challenge from new parties such as AAP, the Congress would have to develop new young leaders in the state. That is also the wish of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi.”
Make ministers available for workers: PPCC chief
Jakhar has asked Capt Amarinder to make ministers available by turns for party workers at the Punjab Congress Bhavan here. It will help in ensuring a constructive interaction between the ministers and party workers, he said.

AAP: Cong leaders interfering in transfers
Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday accused Congress leaders of interfering in the transfers of police and civil officers. Leader of the Opposition HS Phoolka said Congress leaders were behaving worse than Akali leaders and preventing officials from performing their duty effectively. Phoolka said leaders of the ruling party were pressuring police officers to register false cases against their rivals. He criticised PSPCL’s decision to discontinue free electricity to gaushalas across the state. Phoolka said free power should continue as the issue was linked to the religio-cultural ethos.
