Abohar : With the enrollment for primary membership closing on Monday, the first phase of the Congress organisational elections will also conclude. This was stated by recently appointed state Congress president Sunil Jakhar here today.

This was Jakhar’s first visit to his hometown after elevation as state party chief.

Hundreds of workers and supporters thronged his native Panjkosi village today to greet him and several others anxiously waited for him at South Avenue residence here.

Residents jostled each other to present bouquets to him. They also distributed sweets on the occasion.

Later, Jakhar said the enrollment for primary membership had been going on for the past four years. The election process would be initiated soon as per the schedule to be finalised by the AICC.

“We will further strengthen the set-up at the grass-roots level to prepare the party for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Whatever promises the party had made in its manifesto during the polls have to be fulfilled with sincerity, he added.

Asked about the recent spurious cotton seed scam, he said, “It seems surprising that a non-existing firm allegedly marketed Rasi 773 brand duplicate cotton seed from Abohar to Muktsar and the same was supplied back to small traders in Abohar and Fazilka. Why the traders did not purchase the seed from authorised distributors needs to be probed. I today discussed the issue with senior district officers and asked them to bring all erring traders and officials to book.”

On the SYL, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should intervene to solve the tangle judiciously as Punjab had made it clear that the state had no surplus water.
