Jalandhar : Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday advocated the need to increase the ambit of probe of sand mining done during the previous 10 year rule of SAD-BJP government.

Jakhar said that it should be probed that how much money was minted by the SAD-BJP government during the past decade as compared to the amount shown in the state exchequer.

Addressing a press conference, Jakhar said, “Congress would hold a probe into the record of last 10 years of SAD-BJP to ascertain that why the amount of money earned out of sand mining was less as compared to the profit being earned during the current Capt Amarinder’s government.”

The Punjab Congress president said that earlier during the Akali regime, Rs 40 crore was earned out of sand mining. “Under Capt Amarinder Singh’s leadership, this amount has gone upto Rs 460 crore. After the auction of the pending 56 quarries, this revenue would increase upto Rs 1000 crore annually”, he added.

“By this means, where has Rs 10,000 crore earned during SAD-BJP rule gone? The Congress strongly advocates the need to conduct a thorough probe to find out that who benefitted out of this money and why the total amount in the state’s coffers out of sand mining was less”, he questioned.

Further talking about the SAD-BJP protests in the state against sand mining row of Power Minister Rana Gurjit and farmer suicides, Jakhar said, “These leaders should first make it clear that why didn’t they do something during the 10 year rule”, he said.

Jakhar especially cornered BJP Punjab chief and Union Minister of State Vijay Sampla for speaking in favour of farmers. “While Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced that the centre would not help the states in farm loan waivers, Sampla was seen questioning the Capt Amarinder government”, he pointed out.

He said that Modi government would have to provide a farm loan waiver to all the states looking for solution ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. “Modi government will have to provide farm loan waiver to farmers”, he emphasized.

Jakhar also chaired a meeting of congress workers including local MLAs, Municipal Corporation councilors, ex -councilors and women workers where the local leadership demanded strengthening party rank and file ahead of the upcoming civic body polls.

Local MLAs including Pargat Singh, Rajinder Beri, Bawa Henry’s father and ex- minister Avtar Singh Henry, congress leader Jagbir Singh Brar spoke about party’s momentum in Doaba, especially the support of urban voters leading to victory of the Congress.

The party leaders said that many first timers made it to the Vidhan Sabha and demanded that candidates should be selected to provide them a launch pad in the MC polls.

‘Badungar eyeing SAD leadership, posing direct challenge to Sukhbir’

Jalandhar: Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday charged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) with trying to take over control of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) by seizing advantage of its leadership bankruptcy.

Lashing out at SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar’s decision to participate in SAD’s anti-government dharnas, Jakhar said it was evident that having realised the failure of the Badals to provide leadership to SAD, the SGPC president had decided to throw his hat into the political arena and take over the leadership of the Akali Dal.

Addressing a press conference in Jalandhar, Jakhar said that Badungar was clearly trying to grab the SAD leadership in a bid to emerge a political horsepower, just as religious leaders like Gurcharan Singh Tohra and Jagdev Singh Talwandi had done before him.

“Both Tohra and Talwandi had their eyes on SAD leadership and had resorted to political game plans to achieve their ambition,” Jakhar said, adding that leaders like these, and now Badungar, had crossed the thin line that had been always been there between religion and politics.

Badungar had, by participating directly and actively in the SAD protests, posed a direct challenge to Sukhbir Singh Badal’s leadership in the party, which had virtually collapsed in the wake of its dismal performance in the last assembly elections in Punjab, Jakhar said. DP
