‘Steps being taken to promote Gatka’

Nabha : State Forest Minister Sadhu Singh Dharmsot on Sunday announced that the government would take all steps necessary to promote the state’s traditional martial art, Gatka, in educational institutes.

This ancient game inculcates moral ethics and virtuous abilities among children, and instills self-defence skills, he said.

All efforts for promoting the traditional martial art, Gatka, in educational institutions will be taken, the minister said at a function organised by the National Gatka Association of India (NGAI) and its Punjab chapter here.

Elaborating on the historic importance of the martial art in daily life, Dharmsot said Gatka has its eminence among other traditional sports and advised students to adopt it.

Inspector General Police (Patiala Range) A S Rai spoke on the importance of Gatka in modern times and its rich inheritance.

Gatka possesses incredible values which bonds children with our rich legacy, Rai said.

Assuring all support to the NGAI, he hoped that with the concerted efforts of the associations, the ancient game would reach every corner of the world.

NGAI president Harjeet Singh Grewal was also present at the event.
