Chandigarh : Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today met Congress MLAs from the Gurdaspur parliamentary seat, which will witness a byelection later this year.

Though most participants passed it off as a routine meeting, sources said the issue of lack of funds for development works in this parliamentary segment was taken up with the CM.

Some of the MLAs opined that the ruling Congress needed to focus on development with an eye on the bypoll.

Those present at the meeting included Tript Bajwa (Fatehgarh Churian), Sukhjinder Randhawa (Dera Baba Nanak), Barindermeet Pahra (Gurdaspur), Balwinder Singh (Sri Hargobindpur), Fatehjung Bajwa (Qadian) and Aruna Chaudhary (Dinanagar).

A section of the MLAs opined that state Congress chief Sunil Jakhar was a suitable candidate for the bypoll. Former Batala and Qadian MLAs Ashwani Sekhri and Charanjeet Kaur Bajwa are also among the frontrunners.

The seat had fallen vacant after the death of sitting BJP MP Vinod Khanna. Congress candidate Partap Singh Bajwa, now a Rajya Sabha member, had won the seat in 2009.
