PATIALA: After having been ignored for a decade by the previous SAD-BP regime, the royal city is set for a spell of development as the Punjab government has decided to develop and repair the city’s crumbling road network besides taking measures for the overall development of the city, according to a source in the administration.
Chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, chairing a meeting of the officials concerned, on Tuesday, in Chandigarh to discuss the development plan for Patiala, approved nearly ₹30 crore for the development of the city, the source said
In another initiative, the CM has given the go-ahead for the development of the road from Adalat Bazar to the historic Qila Mubarak as a heritage corridor.
The state government has also initiated two pilot projects in the city for the establishment of underground bins at Modi Plaza and behind Shri Kali Mata Mandir, besides identifying 20 more locations for the next phase at a cost of ₹2.6 crore.
This will end the problem of dumping solid waste in the open, the source said.
Captain Amarinder, who represents Patiala in the state assembly, also has approved three channelisation projects to improve the area’s drainage system. These are located at Patiala Chhoti Nadi, Jacobs Drain and Model Town Drain.
The government plans to go in for a chain link fencing of Bir Khule Majra and Bir Majal to check the menace of stray cattle. The CM also gave nod for shifting the dairies outside the city limits to save the sewers from clogging and check the resultant waterlogging.
Besides setting up a new fish market, the government also plans to develop a nature park and nursery under the green mission. Another ₹1 crore has been set aside for the development of parks in the city.
A multi-storeyed parking lot is also on the anvil, along with the replacement of streetlights with the energy-saving LED lights across the city.
It is also proposed to set up 52 model anganwaris in various areas, besides the launch of Avsar Project – a bridge school for slum children, said the source.
Being the hometown of chief minister Amarinder Singh, the city was subjected to extreme apathy under the previous regime.
All development works were at a standstill for the past several years.
