Chandigarh: Anticipating trouble after the court verdict, Congress MLAs in the Malwa belt began mobilising dera followers to maintain peace and tranquility. In the evening, Madan Lal Jalalpur, Ghanaur MLA, visited the area that is home to dera followers. “I have appealed to them to maintain peace and not incite violence.”
He said he was in touch with the police and civil authorities for pursuing dera followers to shun violence.
Party leaders admit that any flare-up by the hardliners or the dera followers could push the situation out of hand.
Vijay Inder Singla, Sangrur MLA, said he had appealed residents, including dera followers, to maintain peace. Due to the burning of a power station and a tehsil office in Sangrur, residents have been asked not to give any provocative statement.
Admitting that the party that did not get support of the dera during the last Assembly elections, another MLA said the party could not afford to take a stand in the politically volatile situation.
